About us

The Roman Catholic Cathedral in Tashkent is the main Catholic church of the Apostolic Administration of Uzbekistan.

The history of our church began with the arrival of a small Catholic community in Tashkent at the end of the 19th century. To meet the spiritual needs of local Catholics, in 1902 Father Justyn Bonaventura Pranaitis, a professor at the Saint Petersburg Imperial Theological Academy, was sent to the Turkestan region. In 1912, in the centre of Tashkent, on the banks of the Salar Canal, he began building the Catholic church.

Today the cathedral, consecrated in honour of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, is the centre of spiritual life for all Catholics in Uzbekistan.

The church is built in the Neo-Gothic style with characteristic architectural elements: stained-glass windows, ornate brickwork and a tall central spire topped with a cross.

Regular services are held according to the liturgical calendar. We invite everyone to visit our church and take part in Holy Mass.

Our parish is forming a group for World Youth Day in Seoul, South Korea, in August 2027, open to young people aged 18 and over. Details and costs are still being prepared. For now, please simply let us know if you are interested, so we can plan and calculate everything. Contact Fr. Michael by the end of October.

  4. Thank You – Parish Picnic

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped with our parish picnic in any way. May the Lord bless our shared efforts and make them bear fruit in greater Christian love and mutual support within our community.

  5. Jubilee Year of St. Francis (until January 10, 2027)

To mark the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi, a plenary indulgence may be obtained by making a pilgrimage to a Franciscan church. As ours is a Franciscan church, you may obtain it right here. The usual conditions apply: sacramental Confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. Conclude with the Our Father, the Creed, and an invocation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Francis, St. Clare, and all the saints of the Franciscan family. The elderly, the sick, and the homebound may also obtain it by uniting themselves spiritually and offering their prayers and sufferings to God. The indulgence may be applied to the souls in Purgatory.

  6. Starting Next Sunday, October 11

    • Children's Catechism – 8:50. Parents, you are the first teachers of the faith. Please register your children and make sure they attend every week. Their formation is our shared responsibility.
    • Parish Choir – 9.00. Do you love to sing? Join us and help our liturgy give glory to God.
  7. Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)

    • Sundays: 30 minutes before Mass
    • First Fridays: 17:00, during Eucharistic Adoration
    • Other times: by appointment with Fr. Michael
  8. Your Parish Needs You!

A living parish depends on the commitment of all its members. We urgently need volunteers for:

    • Lectors: proclaim the Word of God at Sunday Mass
    • Collection: help with the offertory
    • Projector: assist the assembly in praying and singing
    • Choir: lead the community in song
    • Catechesis: support the faith formation of our children

Please do not wait to be asked. Speak to any Parish Council member or Fr. Michael today. For the lectors' schedule, contact Rey Del Prado (@MrReynldeas) or Patty James (@pattyjamesbkk).

  9. Mass Intentions

Envelopes are available at the entrances of the chapel and church. Fill in all details, enclose your Mass offering ($10 per intention), seal the envelope, and hand it to Fr. Michael or leave it in the sacristy.

  10. Stay Connected

The Lord be with you!

History of the Church

  1. Father Justyn Bonaventura Pranaitis began the construction of the Catholic church to the design of the famous Polish architect Ludwik Pańczakiewicz. The first workers were Catholic soldiers stationed in Tashkent. Later, prisoners of war held near Tashkent became the builders. Among them were highly skilled engineers, sculptors and stonemasons.

    1912
  2. After nationalization, various organizations were housed in the unfinished church, including a dormitory of the Electrocable Factory and a warehouse for medical equipment. While the church was used for other purposes, nearly all the sculptures inside were destroyed or looted.

    1925 – 1976
  3. By decision of the authorities, the building was restored and handed over to the Ministry of Culture of the Uzbek SSR. In 1981, the church was granted the status of an architectural and historical monument of Uzbekistan.

    1976
  4. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the government of the Republic of Uzbekistan transferred the church building to the Catholic parish of Tashkent for free use.
